Your personal background.
Updated on February 23, 2014 mactavers moreI've lived in Arizona for 67 years (Tucson, Glendale, and Sedona).
I love writing about Arizona history, antiques,
books, and travel. Many people agree that roses are the world's most
beloved flower. Most people have seen tiny miniature roses the size
of a thumbnail and have seen roses as large
as saucers. Roses have been grown for centuries in Asia, Europe,
Middle East, Northwest Africa and North America. The long stemmed red
rose has become the official flower associated with romantic love, yellow roses
as tokens of friendship and pink or white roses as
symbols of purity.

There are
approximately 35,800 different varieties of roses according to
the American Rose Society. Before exploring Arizona's historical and current connections to roses,
it's fun to look at the history and the folklore of roses.
As long ago as 1200 BC, Homer's epic poem the Iliad describes
Achilles shield as having been decorated with roses after his victory over
Hector. During the same period there are references to rose oil which was used for medicinal purposes and to embalm bodies.
Nero, the Emperor of Rome, was said to have had such a passion for
roses that he insisted that his guests recline on pillows
filled with rose petals, and the banquet rooms be filled with hundreds of
rose blooms. The Romans also used rose petals to form chains and garlands that were
hung for ceremonial occasions.

It remains unknown if the Romans brought roses such as the Red Damask to Europe
or if the returning Crusaders brought the roses back.
In 400 AD the Catholic church adopted the white rose as
the emblem of the Virgin Mary. The Empress Josephine, wife of Napoleon, was said to have
commissioned gardeners to breed new roses for her garden near Paris
which eventually contained over 250 varieties. The Chinese have grown roses for centuries and as the British Empire continued to trade for tea, the tiny roses called tea roses
became the rage throughout Europe. Roses have been cultivated
into various classifications such as climbers, ramblers, miniatures, cluster flowered, large flowered and dwarf flowered.

Roses are prized for their aromatic properties, rose oil, rose water,
edible petals and for decorative uses. Sadly, I've noticed
that many commercially grown roses have lost their pungent smell.
There are a number of stories about how the first roses were brought to the Arizona
Territory. Arizona's most famous rose garden is located in Prescott at
the Sharlot Hall Museum. Prescott was Arizona's first Territorial Capitol.
Sharlot Hall was Arizona's first historian.
The McCormick rose, a French Boursaid pink flower variety,
is believed to have been one of the first rose bushes planted in Arizona.
Margaret Hunt McCormick, the wife of Arizona's second
Territorial governor, had the rose root shipped from her former
home in New Jersey by steamship up the Colorado River and then carried
on a stagecoach to Prescott. She planted the rose next
to their front door.

Today various types of roses can be found growing in most parts of Arizona.

There are many good publications on roses.
One that I have enjoyed is The Complete Rose Bookby Peter McHoy.
Endicott Peabody came to Tombstone in the Arizona

The young priest kept a diary about his experiences
trying to build the St. Paul's Episcopal church.

Green tea consumption is linked with a reduced risk of stroke and heart
disease. The typical Japanese will have about
100 varieties of food per week compared with just 30 in the average British diet and 45 in the average southern European diet.
High cholesterol foods such as red meat and cow's milk are almost non existent traditionally.
Sugar consumption is very low compared with the rest of the world, and the
consumption is far lower in Okinawa compared to the rest
of Japan. The Japanese are said to eat until they are 80% full
rather than stuffed to the max. Sheryl Walters is an experienced

White tea is not rare, but it is relatively scarce.
Some 800-900 tons of white tea are produced each year in the world, which doesn’t exactly
sound like scarcity, does it. However, compared to the 4.5 million tons of all tea produced worldwide annually, white tea’s share is pretty small.
The relative scarcity is pegged to its harvesting.

White tea is made only from the unfurled spring buds on a tea bush.

A typical bush has 3,000 leaves. Because only a
small portion of them are budded on any given harvest day,
the spring harvest is pretty meager. Furthermore, it is said to take 70-80,000
buds to make a kilogram of quality white tea.

Production numbers don’t add up very fast at that rate.
The center of white tea production in the world is Fujian Province
in China. Growing conditions are perfect there and
centuries of tea-making have honed the process to an art as much as a science.
Some quality white teas are grown elsewhere, but there also are teas called "white" that are more mongrel than pureblood.
That’s not true in Fujian. A tea plant’s potent and immature buds, including its silvery hairs, are the ingredients for
white tea. White tea cannot be made from more mature and fully open leaves, no matter
how healthy and fresh they are. While such leaves will be harvested and processed into Chinese oolong tea or green tea or some other quality tea, they are
too old to be of any use for white tea production.

White tea also is the least processed of any Chinese teas.
That is, it is not baked or otherwise cooked to halt oxidization. Rather it is air-dried till it
wilts naturally, which minimizes enzyme breakdown. The
result is a tea that is full of polyphenols, catechins, and other
nutrients. This rich content is what gives white tea its
reputation as an especially healthful tea.

Almost all tea is good for a drinker, but white tea has some unique properties.
For one, its antioxidants are more concentrated than in, for example,
green tea. For another thing, its minimal processing creates
less of the chemical compound called caffeine, which can be a problem for
some consumers of tea.

The specialty nature of white tea means that it is a little pricier than, say, green or black tea.
Mass production is what drives down prices and white
tea is anything but mass-produced. So lovers of white tea must
be prepared to savor the tea and forget about how much was paid for it.
White tea has a special reputation because
it is special. If someone pours you a cup, recognize that
you have been honored. Author's Bio: This post is created by Jean Alberti,

When i still test out nourishment as well as scrumptious items to consume, We found
some thing I have turn out to be a devoted enthusiast associated with: My personal Green tea extract Pear Healthy smoothie.

The thing you need to truly keep in mind while preparing this particular,
is actually when your own pear is simply beginning to
obtain gentle, the actual consistency of the healthy smoothie can come away wonderful.
This particular gentleness occurs whenever you keep your pear from your refrigerator in order to normally
ripen. Whenever gentle sufficient, you are able to nearly "smoosh" this through squeezing this inside your fingers as
well as fingertips.

Very first, you'll fill your own blender along with Soy Whole milk.
Following, add the actual Matcha natural powder as well as
tremble this simply a couple of times to find the matcha combined with the actual whole milk.
Following, a person add the actual pears you have
reduce to the blender. Lastly, a person include your own smashed glaciers.
Based on what type of blender you've, it might seem
like just a little or perhaps a great deal. Exactly what I actually do after i include all of the elements to the blender is actually make use
of the heartbeat choice.

It's my job to do that to be able to reduce the chance associated with atmosphere wallets within the
healthy smoothie. And so i heartbeat this several times, after that go to proceed having
a reduced mixing choice. I'll boost the pace basically may till this ultimately mixes efficiently.
The actual mixing procedure (based on your own blender) ought to consider a maximum of
one minute. Make use of your personal common sense with regard to the kind
of regularity you intend to possess inside your healthy smoothie.

Edible Food Wrappers And Beverage
Bottles! I am so excited! There is a company that says by late 2014 or sometime
in 2015, they will be ready to market edible food wrappers and containers!

I know every day a scientist develops something new, but this is the best news I have heard in a long time.
Anyone who has ever struggled with opening a stubborn package
of a food product will wish this company succeeds in their efforts.
Food packaging is one of my biggest pet peeves and something that
causes me stress. I've often thought if manufacturers didn't spend so much extra money in these wrappings, maybe the
cost of the food itself could be lower. When I open a tea bag
I'm reminded of this. Is it really necessary to place the tea bag inside a
paper envelope?

With this new technology, the whole tea bag would go into the hot
water and dissolve. On the market now! Pack
of premeasured laundry detergent. You just throw one
of these into the washing machine before the clothes are tossed in. These packs contain super concentrated liquid detergent they claim will not only clean your clothes, but
will even remove stains. These packs completely dissolve in the washing machine!
There is a company called MonoSol that is working on a method of creating
food wrappers and containers that are edible and they claim they are very flavorful!
This company has been in business since 1953 making water soluble products.
Those little packets of dish washing detergent that you can toss in the dishwasher are one of their inventions.

They have developed a packet of detergent for the washing machine that
simply dissolves in the wash water.

MonoSol is trying to reduce the 70 million tons of packaging waste that is building up in our landfills each
year. I think we have to use our imagination to understand what this concept really is:
The idea is to create food wrappers and containers that are edible, soluble and flavorful.
Wouldn’t it be nice if we could drink from a cup,
and then eat the cup? The cup could even be flavored with lemon or lime.
We could drop a packet of cocoa into hot water and its plastic-like casing would just dissolve.
It may not be long before we start to see
wrapping like this for instant coffee, oatmeal, pasta and many more products..

The smart guys at MonoSol are working hard to bring this technology into stores very soon. I see unlimited potential here in the food industry.
If you think about it, some fruit has its own natural protective casing: grapes and apples for instance.

The way MonoSol intends to make this casing for food is to simply combine small particles of dried fruit, chocolate shavings,
or other edibles, and hold it all together by electrostatic force.
To understand this concept better, think of the covering drug companies use to cover pills.
We swallow those, don’t we? The molecules used in the casings are strong enough to serve as food packaging
until water breaks them up and it disappears.

This whole concept is mind boggling to me. Food packaging contributes to
a lot of the waste in our homes, and it's something most of
us just accept. Plastic wrappers for cereal, energy bars, deli meats,
and instant coffee all find themselves in the garbage at a rate as high as our
consumption. 0 of 8192 characters usedPost CommentNo HTML is allowed in comments, but URLs will be hyperlinked.

I'd sure like to see a large reduction in our landfills of these plastics; not to mention our oceans!
I would certainly eat food packaged in edible food wrappers,
too.

I would eat them, this way, we can reduse plastic
and styrofoam, these plastics are not useful. Hi, colorfulone I'm glad I introduced you to the
concept of edible food containers. Yes, it is an interesting concept, and one I hope
will become more available to us in the markets. Mary, this is interesting to me, too.

I had not read about edible food wrappers. BTW, your intro photo really got my attention, and I was expecting
something else. Much to my surprise! Voted up and shared. I hope I have
corrected the date now. Hi, toknowinfo I'm keeping an eye out for
these edible containers to be on the market. As of now, I don't see much progress,
to be truthful.

Yes, the dates on the Hub was misleading, cause I wrote the
Hub in 2013 and the promise then was to have these products in the
stores by 2014! Thanks for bringing that to my attention. This is a great hub.

It will be interesting to see what gets invented from all of this.
One correction, in the paragraph above fruit has its own edible protection,
the year says 1914. You might want to change that.
Great hub just the same! Hi, Glenn Stok Thanks for reading and for your comment which really makes a lot
of sense. I see a lot of problems with this while concept to be honest.

Your idea of an "environmentally friendly" wrapper does sound like a good
idea.

I do hope these scientists will perfect a better way of packaging our foods so we can eliminate so
much waste and stop filling our land fills with stuff that will be there for years to come.
I'm in favor of elliminating waste. But I wouldn't eat the edible wrappers
or containers of products because I wouldn't consdier it healthy.
For one thing, people with dirty hands may be handling these items on supermarket shelves.
The other thing that comes to mind is how these edible containers are actually made.
If they are developed from processed foods, they can be
Cancer causing, as is the case with many processed foods many people eat,
especially in America. But that gets into a whole different subject.

In any case,
I think you are on the right track with this article. Well written and informative.

A solution might be to simply consider these "environmentally friendly" wrappers and containers that are biodegradable.
There's no need to eat them. 4 years ago from Midwest U.S.A.

Yes, of course, nobody wants to have our oceans polluted with all that garbage.
That is definitely a problem, but I'm not so sure
that edible wrappers will be the solution. I think those are much too expensive,
and not healthy. I remember when a box of crackers had an inner lining of waxed paper, and
there were four crackers per layer instead of those huge skycrapers they have now.

I really do miss those. When I'm not at home, I sometimes use my keys to
tear a hole through the wrapping, and then it will open more easily.

Thanks for your response. Hi, Huntgoddess. Thanks for sharing your honest opinion on edible wrappers.
I would like to eat things like crackers without having to use scissors to open the
package (among other things). I would certainly like to see so much plastic removed from our oceans and landfills.
4 years ago from Midwest U.S.A. I don't think we need to eat food wrappers.
I believe these "edibly - wrapped" foods will not be fresh or of high quality, and will also be exceedingly expensive and highly processed --- which is already a problem in our food supply.

Hi, Huntgoddess. Thanks so much for reading and adding your comment.
