Here's a lifesaving health tip: Add "spend time with family and friends" to your to-do list.
Research shows that social detachment — having few close relationships
— is as bad for you as smoking and worse than obesity.
Older adults can become isolated by life situations such as lack of
transportation, landing this issue squarely on AARP Foundation's radar screen. Ten percent of
the 15,000 people who returned the two-page
questionnaire reported they had trouble "staying connected" with family,
friends and neighbors. Next steps for AARP Foundation: learning how to help repair
and strengthen the broken links. Site selection was based primarily on U.S.
Census data (percentage of people age 65-plus living alone, with disabilities, and percentage
of those 60-plus living in rural areas). Findings are not generalizable to the general U.S.
AARP Foundation Tax-Aide taxpayer population.
Assisted living
was the next step, but Ms. Hruska didn't know how they
would pay for it, with Social Security her only income.

By 2010, the growth in the demand for healthcare occupations will be twice that of other non-health occupations.
90% of Long Term care organizations lack sufficient nurse staffing to provide even the
most basic care. Home Health agencies are often forced to refuse new admissions (due to lack of labor).
High cost of nursing turnover contributes to lower bottom lines.
Recent report from VHA Inc, a healthcare provider alliance, finds
the cost of filling a vacated nursing position is about 100% of
that nurse’s salary.

Inpatient rehabilitation is part of the care plan for patients admitted to the
hospital. Inpatient rehabilitation is provided to patients following many types of surgery for
various medical conditions including hip and knee replacements, lymphedema, breast cancer, gynecologic cancer and
vascular disease. Patients who have suffered strokes or other
neurological conditions as well as babies in the NICU also receive rehabilitative therapy.
Patients admitted to Mercy receive their therapy in one of the two rehabilitation gyms
located in The Bunting Center. Patients in contact isolation, on a ventilator, or in the NICU are
seen in their individual, private rooms. Inpatient Rehabilitation Services at Mercy provides
wound care to our patients. Our certified wound care specialist guides patients in caring for their wounds.
Whirlpool therapy, most often used for patients with vascular conditions,
is directed by our wound care specialist if recommended by the patient’s surgeon. Patients may be in need of additional rehabilitation following their discharge
from The Bunting Center at Mercy. The Center for
Restorative Therapies at Mercy provides comprehensive outpatient
rehabilitation serves. Often, patients already have been to the Center
for their pre-operative therapy and choose to continue with the Center’s licensed therapists for their
post-operative rehabilitation following their hospital discharge.
If you are seriously considering being a nurse, the
first question you have to ask yourself is why you want this job?
Should your answer be for money or for fame, then you better think
of another career path. Nursing is a demanding profession that requires dedication. It
is not a 9 to 5 job because sometimes, you may be assigned to work the graveyard
shift or extend beyond 8 hours of work especially when there are a lot of patients to attend to.
For those that just graduated from high school and still don’t know what to do, you may sign up
as a volunteer in a clinic or hospital so you get to see first hand what do these
individuals do. Some activities nurses do on a regular basis include
collecting samples from patients, checking their vital signs, blood pressure and temperature.
